Mileage trackers tell you how far you drove. DropLane tells you whether the day was worth it.

Two days. More miles. Less money.

Tuesday: 96 miles, three drives. Yesterday: 62 miles, two drives. A mileage app will tell you Tuesday was the fuller day — and it's right. Tuesday left £99. Yesterday left £116.

Miles are the easy half, and the half that tells you nothing. Which day was worth getting up for is in the other column — and that is the column DropLane fills in for you, on the day, without you writing anything down.

What did the day actually pay?

£179.01 sounds like a good day. Eight hours and forty-three minutes, three hundred and twelve miles and £45.49 of costs later, it worked out at £15.32 an hour. That is the number nobody driving has, and the one DropLane hands you before you're through the door.

One day's figures, straight off the app in the films above. Yours will be different — the point is having them on the day, in the van, instead of finding out in April.

Three steps, and two of them aren't yours

There is no start button in DropLane, on purpose. Nobody remembers to press one at six in the morning with a van full of parcels.

1

Turn it on once

Install the app and allow location in the background. That's the last bit of setup there is.

2

Drive

Every drive saves itself, with the route, the stops, and how long you were at each one.

3

Sort it in a tap

Business, empty, on the way to a pick-up, or personal. The totals and the tax figure follow on their own.

"Always" lets drives record with the app closed.

While you're driving, a Live Activity keeps the miles climbing on the lock screen — so you can see the drive being recorded without unlocking anything.

The report, portrait or landscape

Then the days stack up on their own. Pick a week, a month or your own dates, tick what goes in, and the PDF for the accountant is one tap away — built from drives you never had to log.

This is the PDF itself, not a picture of the switches that make it. Pick the shape that suits whoever reads it — upright for filing, wide when the trips table needs the room — and it rebuilds either way.

Questions couriers actually ask

Straight answers, from someone who does the job.

Isn't this just another mileage tracker?

It records mileage the same way, without a start button. The difference is what happens after: your takings go in, the fuel, parking and running costs come off, and the app tells you what the hour actually paid. A mileage figure on its own never told anyone whether the round was worth doing.

Does it drain the battery?

DropLane doesn't keep the GPS running all day. It sits quietly until it notices you've left where you parked, records while you're moving, and goes back to sleep when you stop.

Do I have to press start?

No — and there's no button to press. That's the whole point. If you have to remember, you'll forget on the day it matters.

What if I forget to sort a drive?

Nothing is lost. Unsorted drives wait on the Days screen, and the app nudges you rather than guessing for you.

Will my route history end up somewhere?

No. There's no account and no server. Everything lives on your iPhone, and backs up only to your own iCloud if you want it to.

I drive a bike, not a van.

That works. Cargo-bike miles are recorded the same way. The built-in mileage rates are for motor vehicles, though, so what a bike can claim depends on your country and your circumstances — worth asking an accountant.

Is my country's mileage rate in there?

Seventeen countries have their official rate built in and kept current. Anywhere else, type your own rate once and the app does the maths.

Can I use it in kilometres?

Yes. Miles or kilometres, your own currency, and the fuel price you actually pay — all in Settings, on the first screen.

Does it work where there's no signal?

Yes. Recording runs off your iPhone's own GPS and wants no internet at all. Drives taken out of signal come back labelled “Start” and “End” instead of street names, and DropLane fills those in the next time it sees Wi-Fi. A week down lanes with no bars still adds up right.

What happens when I get a new phone?

Sign in to the same iCloud and your drives, earnings and expenses come back on their own. There is no account to make and no password to lose, because there was never a server holding any of it — the backup is yours, in your own iCloud.

What if I stop paying — do I lose my records?

Nothing is deleted. Your drives stay on the iPhone and in your own iCloud, exactly where they were. But DropLane needs an active subscription to open, so if you want the figures somewhere else, export the CSV before you go. It's in Settings, and it's one tap.

How do I know what fuel really cost before the card invoice arrives?

Tell DropLane the price per litre your fuel card charges, then log the litres when you fill up. The cost is worked out on the day, so the week's profit is right weeks before the invoice turns up.

Stop guessing what the day made.

Fourteen days free, no account, and nothing to remember at six in the morning.
